U.K. pet shop owner fined for selling goldfish to boy

This article from the U.K. Daily Mail web site is about a poor woman who was fined and ordered to wear an electronic monitoring device for selling a goldfish to a 14 year old boy.  This is in violation of a 2006 law passed in the U.K. regarding the health and wellbeing of animals.  While we may deride our European cousins for this sort of stupidity, it is also true we are closely approaching the same here in the United States.

New species of coral, sponges found near Hawaii

I always wonder how long it will be before such species are available for the hobbiest.  These are new, and were found on preserve land...er...water...and so may never be, if that's the only location they can be found.

Clever octopus builds a mobile home

I've wanted an octopus ever since I was a little kid.  Someday, I will get one. I've seen them on sale several times at Pets Inc. in Tempe, usually from $70 to $120 depending on size and species.

5,600 new species found in deep sea

This Enypniastes, a transparent sea cucumber, creeps forward on its many tentacles at about 2 cm per minute while sweeping detritus-rich sediment into its mouth at 2,750 meters in the northern Gulf of Mexico. "A new report records 17,650 species living below 656 feet, the point where sunlight ceases. The findings were the latest update on a 10-year census of marine life."

Flushed away! Fish survives and is rescued

Image from Flushed AwayI just had to share this. I had no idea a fish could survive once flushed down the toilet. For some reason I had it in my head that it would mean instant death. Not that I make a practice out of it of course, but still something to think about. As a side note, the image is from the movie Flushed Away, which if you haven't seen, do. Very funny.
